Yet another suspicious fire at the same abandoned Mill Square building (12 photos)

That's three fires at that location in less than two weeks

There was another fire in the Pulp Tower at Mill Square Sunday evening.

At about 5 p.m., Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to a 911 call with several trucks.

Upon arrival, firefighters climbed up a ladder attached to the side of the Mill Square Pulp Tower building before deciding to use their own ladder and enter through a second story window, while other firefighters entered from a door on the ground level.

They fed an attack line through that window and used it to put out the fire.

The aerial ladder on one firetruck was extended to allow firefighters up to inspect the building from above.

The fire was put out within about 20 to 30 minutes.

Platoon Chief Michael Dionisi noted that the building has no electricity and said the fire looked suspicious.

His crew reported that old office furniture, random bits of wood, paper, and debris were on fire in the building.

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services also attended two Pulp Tower fires, one on Apr. 17 and another Apr. 27.

Constable Sonny Spina said police were also on scene of Sunday's incident.

Spina said the fire is 'definitely suspicious' and that it occurred at roughly the same spot in the Pulp Tower as the fire two days ago, but had no information at the time of the interview as to whether all the three Pulp Tower fires occurred in that spot.

Spina said no injuries were reported.

Staff of the nearby Mill Steakhouse and Wine Bar said since August 2016 they have seen increasing amounts of youth around or even on the roof of the Pulp Tower, however they did not see anyone on Sunday.

Restaurant staff said the Sunday fire was first spotted by nearby landscapers who saw black smoke.

Landscaper Jim Rogers, who said he called 911, did not see any suspicious activity.

If you have any information regarding the fire, call Sault Police at 705-949-6300, or Crime Stoppers at 705-942-7867 or 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
