Year-to-date decrease of 56.3% in bridge traffic

The International Bridge Administration today announced that one-way traffic crossings of the International Bridge at Sault Ste. Marie totaled 22,147 for the month of September 2021.

Traffic for the calendar year to-date on Sept. 30, 2021 is 132,759. This represents a year-to-date decrease of 56.3 per cent from 2020 and an 87.2 per cent decrease compared to 2019. The bridge has processed 103.2 million bridge crossings since 1962.  

This difference in crossings comparing 2021 to 2020 is 8,646 which represents an increase of 64.0 per cent for the month of September.

The change in traffic comparing 2021 to pre-pandemic crossings in 2019 for the month of September, autos  have decreased 87.6 per cent, pre-paid accounts have decreased 86.7 per cent and commercial vehicles have declined 19 per cent.  

The International Bridge funds operational costs with toll revenue, including the bridge structure, maintenance facilities, the Bridge Authority toll plaza, and building maintenance.
