Wynne puts Algoma jobs at risk, says Horwath

QUEEN’S PARK – Under questioning from NDP Leader Andrea Horwath, Premier Kathleen Wynne's government refused Monday to protect Algoma steel jobs in Sault Ste. Marie.

The NDP has committed to investments to save the Huron Central Railway – the line that carries Algoma steel and other products of the local economy to market. By refusing to save the railway, Wynne is putting hundreds of Algoma steel jobs at risk.

“Kathleen Wynne has done a lot of damage to the Sault and its economy,” said Horwath. “And now it’s clear that she’s prepared to walk away from good jobs, and to keep driving the economy further into trouble.

“Protecting Algoma steel jobs is a critical part of turning things around for workers and families in the Sault – and Algoma and the Huron Central line are important parts of the revitalization the NDP wants to help the Sault achieve.”

Meanwhile, the Conservative party and its candidate have kept their party’s plans secret.

“They won’t tell us what they’ll do because more Conservative-style cuts are the last thing the Sault needs,” said Horwath.

The Huron Central Railway requires upgrades to meet new federal safety standards, or it will shut down. The NDP’s commitment is $4 million in each of five years – a commitment that will ensure the local economy can keep moving, and that the railway can be a backbone for economic growth and job creation.
