Workweek Outlook: High pressure brings quiet weather

The result will be more sunshine than cloud cover and the lack of any active weather systems

High-pressure moves from the center of North America to Ontario late Monday and remains in place until Friday. The result will be more sunshine than cloud cover and the lack of any active weather systems. This slow-moving feature will also help keep winds down and allow temperatures to settle in near more typical values for late January.

So far, in 2020, the January thaw has lasted the entire month.  Almost half of the days so far this year have reached the freezing mark or higher each day. The fast few weeks have felt more like late-March or early November than January. It appears that despite a few days of slightly cooler weather, we will see a warm start to February as well.

Monday will be partly cloudy with a northwesterly wind developing this afternoon. Daytime highs climb up to near -1°C and then fall quickly overnight, reaching -8°C by Tuesday morning.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be mostly sunny as the high-pressure reinforces over the region. Temperatures will fall back to more typical values for late January as daytime highs hit -5°C. Winds will be light and variable both days. Overnight lows will fall to near -15°C.

A slow warming trend and increasing cloud cover arrive on Thursday and Friday as temperatures climb back to near the freezing mark. This weekend we jump back into positive digits again for temperatures and see the risk of a few flurries to start the new month.
