Workweek Outlook: Cold core low is the final nail in May's coffin

This cold-core low will bring damp cool weather into the Sault region for the start of this week

Good riddance to May and the weather it provided us with for the last month. Daytime highs and overnights were unseasonable cool and several degrees below the 30-year average.

We have endured a total of 19 days with at least a trace of precipitation, compared to the 12 days of rain we normally receive. You can imagine that this has brought higher than normal rainfall amounts over the last month.

The end of May will be plagued with a cold-core upper-level low weather system that is notorious for cool, unsettled weather.

This cold-core low will bring damp cool weather into the Sault region for the start of this week. This will guarantee that the month of May will end with more rainfall than normal and with colder than normal temperatures over the last month.

Until this cold-core low exits into Quebec at the end of the week, we will see unsettled weather and little sunshine.

Morning fog will give way to mostly cloudy skies before scattered thunderstorms arrive on Monday. Temperatures should climb to near +20C.  A chance of showers continues overnight with fog.

Tuesday will by cloudy with patchy showers through the day. The best chance of sustained rain will be in the afternoon. Cooler air will move in with daytime highs in the low teens.

Wednesday will remain cool with scattered showers in the morning and a chance of some brief sun later in the day.

More seasonal temperatures should return Thursday, but we may have to wait until Friday for a full day of sun and no risk of precipitation. This is a positive sign that June may bring more summer-like weather to help us forget about this damp and cool May.
