Work part-time; get paid for learning a trade, working out in the gym (8 photos)

Sault-based Canadian Army regiments host annual Armoury Open House, job fair; event included a look at refurbished regimental gym

The Sault Ste. Marie Armoury opened its doors Saturday to show a wide variety of employment opportunities available in the Canadian Army Reserve, those interested able to apply on the spot.

Visitors were also welcome to view interactive displays and participate in activities throughout the day.

The 49th Field Regiment and 33 Service Battalion serve out of the historic Armoury building on Pine Street.

Lieutenant-Colonel Lance Knox, 49th Field Regiment commanding officer, was also pleased to officially open the Armoury’s refurbished gym, where reservists work out.

“This space (the gym) hasn’t been filled without a lot of support from a lot of people,” Knox told SooToday.

“We’ve had private donors step up and provide gym equipment or money, some of the officers have provided personal money and work to get it where it is today...soldiers of the garrison can use it any time the building’s open, but we can make arrangements for them to come in after hours and use it as well.”

The gym is not open to the public, Knox said.

Reservists can be trained in a skilled trade, even become a Red Seal Chef, said Captain Glen Vine, 33 Service Battalion company commander.

“The Army Reserves offer great leadership opportunities, where Canadians can learn many new and transferable skills that they can apply in their existing careers and daily lives, all while proudly serving their country...the Government of Canada has committed to increasing the size of the Reserve Force to 30,000 (an increase of 1,500) and to reduce the length of time it takes for an individual to join the Reserve Force to approximately 30 days,” a National Defence news release stated.
