NEWMARKET - The Royal Canadian Mounted Police's (RCMP) Aboriginal Pre-Cadet Training Program (APTP) offers Canadian Aboriginal peoples aged 19 to 29 the opportunity to get an inside look at the life of an RCMP police officer.

This summer program provides participants with hands-on experience in the RCMP's training program. Ontario's RCMP Recruiting Unit is pleased to announce that two applicants from Northern Ontario have been selected to participate in the APTP at the RCMP Academy ("Depot" Division) in Regina. The successful candidates are Melissa McGinnis, from Fort Frances and Jordan Belsito-Boissoneau, from Sault Ste. Marie.

Ms. McGinnis and Mr. Belsito-Boissoneau will attend a three-week training program at Depot, from May 22 to June 9, 2017. The training focuses on teaching collaborative problem-solving skills, law enforcement, public speaking, cultural diversity, and facilitating Safe Community Workshops in communities.

There are also elements of physical fitness and drill, which promote team work and provide participants with long-term strategies to meet personal fitness goals. The RCMP will provide transportation, meals, accommodation, uniform, and three weeks of training wages.

Currently, 8 per cent of RCMP officers self-identify as Aboriginal. The RCMP is committed to increasing the number of Aboriginal officers to 10 per cent to better represent the communities we serve across the country.
