Women in uniform donate to sick kids (5 photos)

Toys will go to Sault Area Hospital

Sick children in Sault Area Hospital will have stuffed animals, Barbie dolls, warm baby blankets and other comforting items thanks to donations made by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 members.

Several long tables of donated goods were packed into boxes and delivered to SAH Saturday as Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary Zone H-4 members met at Branch 25 on Great Northern Road for their annual meeting.

"It's a wonderful donation," said Kierston Miron, SAH maternal/child department's patient care supervisor, speaking to SooToday.

"These things will come in handy for all the children we look after, we're very grateful they took the time to do this for us."

The donation drive began a year ago and was spearheaded by Pat Stewart, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 member and Ladies Auxiliary Zone H-4 commander.

The zone consists of seven Legion branches, including those in Sault Ste. Marie, Massey, Elliot Lake, Bruce Mines, St. Joseph Island, Wawa and White River.

Several boxes of donated goods, from the same campaign, are on their way to children undergoing treatment at the Northeast Cancer Centre in Sudbury.

Saturday's activities also included a parade outside Branch 25, speeches from several Legion officers and Michael Mantha, Algoma-Manitoulin MPP.

The zone hopes to repeat another toy drive for sick kids next year.
