With heavy snow looming, city extends 'significant weather event'

Sault Ste. Marie has extended its significant weather event due to heavy snow.

During the weather event, all roads and sidewalks operated by the city are deemed to be in a "state of repair" indefinitely, the city said in a news release.

The city asks drivers and pedestrians to be cautious when travelling during this time.

Motorists are urged not to park on city streets during the day to facilitate the efficiency of road maintenance.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is extending its significant weather event with respect to heavy snow conditions. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Sault Ste. Marie with snowfall accumulations of 10 to 15 cm beginning Thursday afternoon into Friday morning. Surfaces such as roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow, and motorists should expect hazardous winter driving conditions. 

Public Works crews work diligently during significant weather events, but it may take longer than usual to ensure public safety and that the roadways, sidewalks, and transit bus stops meet normal maintenance standards. Public Works monitors the weather, patrols the roadways, and deploys all available crews to address any snow and ice accumulation.

During this time, all roads and sidewalks maintained by the city are considered to be in a 'state of repair' until further notice. Drivers and pedestrians should use an appropriate level of caution when travelling during the event. The parking bylaw remains in effect, with motorists not permitted to park on city streets during the winter months between midnight and 6 a.m. However, during a winter event, motorists are also asked not to park on city streets during the day. This will assist in the efficiency of maintaining the roads.
