A 14-foot snowman effigy takes its fiery ascent into a dusky springtime sky shortly after being put to the torch in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., on Mar. 24.

Several hundred Lake Superior State University students and staff celebrated spring's arrival with LSSU's 47th-annual snowman burning ceremony.

The tradition takes its inspiration from the Rose Sunday Festival in Weinheim-en-der-Bergstrasse, Germany.
