Why we're super duper proud of Casey

This list is displayed on the cancer.ca website to show the progress of people who registered as a “Cancer Fighter” — somebody who hosts an individual fundraiser of their choice for the Canadian Cancer Society. 

Taking the number 8 spot in all of Ontario, Casey Cassan raised $3,705.00 in the fight against cancer by cutting her hair alongside her mother, Theresa, at her school in June.

“When people in our community join us in the fight against cancer, we truly see a community that cares. For Casey to cut off all of her hair to raise money for cancer it shows an amazing contribution to our community. The Canadian Cancer Society relies on people like Casey and her family to make steps in the fight against this disease,” says Lori McDonald, Fundraising Coordinator for the Algoma Canadian Cancer Society. 

Casey started this journey of wanting to join in the fight against cancer to offer support to a family friend who was battling breast cancer.

She offered to shave her head when her friend lost her hair to chemotherapy but her friend asked her to do something different to show her support. 

As a result, Casey decided to grow her hair, cut it, and then donate it to make a wig for a child fighting cancer.

Casey then embarked on her fund raising campaign culminating in an assembly at Ben R. McMullin public school where she and her mother cut their hair for cancer in front of all of the staff and students. 

Honoured by the support she received after raising more than seven times her original goal of $500, she spoke to fellow students about being a pebble that causes a ripple and eventually a giant wave. 

She encouraged others to take action to support worthy causes like this one. 

She presented a giant cheque to the local Cancer Society and with the assistance of her fellow students also collected more than 200 cans of food for the local food bank.

Through the Canadian Cancer Society website, Casey was able to set up her own online fundraising webpage and reach out to her friends and family to raise money for her courageous haircut.
