At least two of the street performers featured in this weekend's inaugural Buskerfest reported record takes in Sault Ste. Marie.

Travis Saunders (shown) from Calgary has performed hundreds of shows, including invited appearances at the 1999 Pan-Am Games in Winnipeg and the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, but he's never taken in more money than when he passed the hat this weekend in the Sault.

Similarly, veteran street performer Jeff Hill from Toronto told SooToday.com that he had not one, but two all-time record takes for individual performances here.

Hill has just completed his 14th season of summer busking.

"This is the best first-time festival I've done in years," Hill told us.

It was particularly rewarding to see so many Saultites remaining for five hours to catch all of the acts, he said.

Ward 6 Councillor Jason Collins, who spearheaded the event with help from SaultYouth.com, said the festival is a definite keeper and it will be back next year.

The three-day event finished at 5 p.m. tonight.

Collins said it worked because organizers went to the street performers themselves to find out how to put on a successul busking event, and then followed their advice.
