A new wave of technology expected to hit casinos sometime next year may push out the slot machine as we currently know it, warns the online version of Wired magazine.

Slots are expected to be replaced by dumb terminals that will download a wide variety of games from a central server, says Wired's Daniel Terdiman.

At most casinos, it will take about one year for the thin-client technology to be approved by gaming regulators.

Indian-owned casinos, however, have less bureaucracy to contend with and tend to offer innovations sooner than their non-native counterparts.

Terminals that can access a library of games through a networked server are thought by some industry officials to be a perfect fit with the current emphasis on customer loyalty programs.
