********************** Central Algoma Secondary School receives national physical education award Central Algoma Secondary School announced today that it received the Platinum School Recognition Award from the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Eduation, Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD).

The Platinum Award recognizes Canadian Schools that offer 150 minutes per week of quality physical education to every student throughout the school year.

Less than three percent of 17,256 Canadian schools qualified for the Platinum Award this year.

Central Algoma Secondary School is one of the 440 schools recognized in Canada to receive this prestigious award for the 2003-2004 year.

This is the fifteenth consecutive year that CASS has won this award.

"Winning this national award is an important achievement for schools," says Nick Forsberg, president of CAHPERD.

"Schools offering 150 minutes of physical education per week provide a quality program that contributes to the healty growth and development of every student, and provides the knowledge and skills that they need to be active for life."

Thls achievment was accomplished through the combined efforts of the entire school community including students, teachers, school administration, the Parent Council, and the Board of Education.

CASS achieved this award because it has 18 extracurricular teams that involved 33% or 180 different students.

The intramural program, which has been recognized as one of the best in Canada, involves over 75% of the student population.

Through a combination of Physical Education classes & extracurricular and intramural activities, Central Algoma Secondary School developed an athletic program second to none.

Thanks to the support of the Algoma District School Board, CASS staff, parents/guardians, and of course, our students, are we able to maintain such a quality program.
