Brian Curran is the man responsible for keeping the lights on in Sault Ste. Marie.

So why's he in the dark?

Curran is president and chief executive officer of PUC Services Inc., but he was wearing a different hat when we photographed him on Friday.

His theatrically lit appearance at Galaxy Cinemas was as chair of the 2002 United Way campaign, where Curran recognized dozens of local volunteers for extraordinary efforts to this year's campaign team.

Yesterday's event was the campaign wrap-up.

The total raised, $755,000, was far short of the United Way's $1 million goal, but Curran said that many organizations make their contributions during the holiday season and he projected the total raised would at least $933,000.

The organization, which supplies funding to more than 20 local agencies, decides in January how to distribute the money raised.
