Paul Jeffrey Whalen is in police custody this morning.

He was called out by police around 8 a.m. from this house (the tall red one) in the 300 block of Second Avenue. where police had received information he was present.

Neighbours were evacuated from their homes during the extraction operation.

Police are currently executing a search warrant at the address.

They estimate neighbours may be allowed to return sometime around 10:30 a.m., once they've satisfied themselves that no one else is inside and the scene is determined to be safe.

Whalen surrendered without incident when called out of the residence, police tell us.

Two women were also taken into to custody.

Their names and any charges laid against them are expected to be announced later today.

"I knew something was going on," says neighbour Henry Sowka, who said he's seen lots of late-night activity around the house, including taxis coming and going at three, four and five a.m.

Sowka also said he's seen police cruisers at the house in recent weeks, ostensibly in regard to a missing outboard motor.

Whalen was wanted in wanted in relation to a gun discharge last month on Boston Avenue in the City's east end.

A 23-year old woman was taken to Sault Area Hospital after that incident.
