The City of Sault Ste. Marie would like to advise residents of its hours of operation for services provided during the holiday season.

Administrative offices

Closed Dec. 25, 26 and Jan. 1. Includes the Cemetery office, Civic Centre, GFL Memorial Gardens office, Sault Transit, and Public Works and Engineering Services.

For 24-hour emergency service requests, call Public Works at 705-759-5201.

Arenas

City operated arenas (John Rhodes and McMeeken) will close Dec. 24 at 4 p.m. and will reopen on Dec. 27 for scheduled events. All arenas will be open Dec. 31 until 4 p.m. for scheduled events only. All facilities are closed Jan. 1.

GFL Memorial Gardens

Administrative and Box Office is closed Dec. 25 and 26. Open Dec. 27 for scheduled events. Facility closes at 4 p.m. on Dec. 31 and will be closed on Jan. 1.

Northern Community Centre

Closed Dec. 24 at 4 p.m. and will reopen on Dec. 27. A free family sports drop-in day will take place on Dec. 27 and Jan. 3. Sensitive playtime on both days will be from 1 - 2:30 p.m. and open drop-in sessions will take place from 2:30 - 4 p.m. The Northern Community Centre will be open Dec. 31 until 4 p.m. for scheduled events only and will be closed Jan. 1.

John Rhodes Community Centre Pool

Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site

Closed Dec. 23 to Jan. 2.

Seniors’ Centres (Drop-In and Northern Community Centre)

Closed Dec. 25 to Jan. 2.

Public Library

The James L. McIntyre Centennial and Korah branch Library will be open Dec. 24 from 9 a.m. – noon. Both libraries will be closed Dec. 25 and 26. The James L. McIntyre Library will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the Korah Branch Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 31. All libraries will be closed Jan. 1.

Refuse and recycling collection

There is no collection Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. Collection will be one day late for both weeks.

Residents are reminded that there will be a four-bag limit during the week of Dec. 23 and Dec. 30. All garbage must be in proper containers or bags and meet the city’s weight restrictions. Bag tags must be adhered to any bags beyond the four-bag limit. Bag tags can be purchased at various locations throughout the City. Visit saultstemarie.ca/bagtags for more information.

Cardboard, steel cans, aluminum containers, glass bottles, #1 and #2 plastics and all wrapping paper that is not foil or cellophane can be recycled.

Christmas trees, towels, blankets and books can be dropped off at the Clean North collection depot at the Cambrian Mall parking lot Dec. 26 to Jan. 12 with tree chipping scheduled for Jan. 13.

No Styrofoam will be collected. All Styrofoam can be placed with regular garbage pick up. No cardboard/paper, wrapping paper or boxboard will be collected. Residents are encouraged to use their recycling bins for cardboard and paper.

The Landfill site located at 402 Fifth Line East will be closed Dec. 25, 26 and Jan. 1.

Sault Ste. Marie Transit

Regular transit – last buses depart the terminal Dec. 24 at 5:30 p.m. Regular transit will not operate Dec. 25 and 26.

Last buses depart the terminal Dec. 31 at 11:15 p.m. No regular transit on Jan. 1.

The transit office will close at noon on Dec. 24 and will be closed Dec. 25, 26 and Jan. 1.

Parabus service – last pick up or return on Dec. 24 will be at 5:30 p.m. Parabus will run Dec. 25 and 26. The last pick up or return on Dec. 31 will be at 11:15 p.m. No Parabus service on Jan. 1.

Free downtown parking

The City of Sault Ste. Marie Parking Division is pleased to provide free downtown parking this holiday season. Effective Dec. 17, 2018 to Jan. 1, 2019 free parking is available at all meters, pay and display units, and two-hour municipal parking lots in the downtown area.

Please note that the holiday exemption does not include parking in handicap spaces without a permit, any identified no parking areas, fire routes and private (permit only) lots. The operations schedule is available online.
