In celebration of Canada Day, the Sault Ste. Marie Canal and Fort St. Joseph national historic sites will be hosting a variety of activities for the whole family.

Sault Ste. Marie Canal

  •  Costumed interpreters are guiding children's games from the early 1900s between 1pm and 5pm.
  • Free tours of the Canal and Powerhouse are being offered at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and will focus on the Canal’s history and its role in the development of Sault Ste. Marie.
  • Come join the Métis Nation of Ontario in celebrating the many fascinating aspects of Métis culture.
  • Catch live entertainment by local band Northbound 35, who are performing on top of the Canalman's Shelter between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m.
  • Parka, the Parks Canada beaver mascot will be making an appearance and children can participate in new Club Parka activities.

The Canal Visitor Centre will be open from 10:00am to 8:00pm. Call 705-941-6205 for more information.

Fort St. Joseph

  • Fort St. Joseph staff, dressed in period clothing, invite you to ring in our nation's birthday on the shores of Lake Huron.
  • Participate in guided tours of the site, hike the nature trails, and have some cake and lemonade. There will be games for kids, as well as the popular Xplorers program.
  • Entry to the site is free this day, and activities are scheduled throughout the day and into the evening.


Fort St. Joseph will be open from 9:30 am to 7:00 pm on July 1st. Call 705-246-2664 for more information.

The Sault Ste. Marie Canal and Fort St. Joseph National Historic Sites are two of 167 national historic sites operated by Parks Canada.
