This is Friday. Do you know what rhymes with Friday? Beer!

When the Essar Centre becomes the GFL Memorial Centre later this summer, what kind of beer would you like to drink there?

The pouring-rights contract at the Sault's premier sports and entertainment venue is up for grabs.

On Monday night, City Council is expected to award the three-year contract to Molson Coors, whose beerage has been served at the Essar Centre over the past three years.

Molson Coors' proposal was selected by expert city beeracrats from three bids.

Molson Coors is promising to promote both the rebranded venue and the Soo Greyhounds Hockey Club, using Molson Canadian Hockey House suite-night promotions and (subject to approval), special displays at eight local LCBOs.

Other hockey clubs that the brewer is involved with are:

  • Kingston Frontenacs
  • Peterborough Petes
  • Kitchener Rangers
  • Niagara Ice Dogs
  • Sarnia Sting
  • Windsor Spitfires
  • Barrie Colts
  • Owen Sound Attack
  • Sudbury Wolves
  • North Bay Battalion
  • Belleville Senators

Starting July 1, the company will pay $37,000 a year for the pouring rights, as well as supplying $4,000 worth of beer cups annually.

Over the three-year contract term, the deal will generate $111,000 in revenue for the city, up $6,000 from the previous  contract with the same supplier.

Monday's City Council meeting will be livestreamed on SooToday starting at  4:30 p.m.
