Weekend Outlook: Winter storm crushes dreams of spring

About 5-10cm of snow is expected Friday

In just one short week we will see record-breaking warm temperatures and substantial melting turn back into ice, snow, and squalls. A large winter storm will target the Great Lakes region on Friday and in its wake cold air will sweep across the region to bring winter back to the Sault regions.

The winter storm will just miss the Sault region to the south, but we will catch the northern edge with some mixed precipitation. About 5-10cm of snow arrives early Friday with freezing rain and ice pellets likely later in the afternoon and evening. Gusty northeast winds will blow most of the day. Regions to the east of the Sault could produce higher snowfall amounts while regions to the north will see less. Areas east of the city will also see much more freezing rain.

Saturday and Sunday look to bring scattered snow squalls back into the region with 5-10cm possible each day as temperatures remain below the freezing mark. Gusty northwest winds will blow both days.

The battle between winter and spring will continue next week as warmer than normal temperatures and rain return for a few days early next week followed by colder air later in the week.
