Weekend Outlook: The first serious cold front of fall arrives

The impact of the cold front will be short-lived as warm air pushes temperatures back above normal next week

We've had a few cold spells and frost already this fall, but we haven't had that sharp cold front yet that brings the threat of changing rain to snow. Well, that comes to an end this weekend.

Sunday will see a sharp cold front drop temperatures rapidly that day as precipitation lingers in the Sault region. That drop in temperatures, notably aloft, will bring the risk of the odd wet flurry mixed with lingering showers.

The locations with higher elevations north of the city have the best chance locally of seeing any wet snow mixed with rain. The ground is warm enough that any wet flakes will melt on contact or be washed away by the showers. The impact of the cold front will be short-lived as warm air pushes temperatures back above normal next week.

Friday will see daytime highs climb above seasonal values into the upper teens under mostly cloudy skies. There is the slight risk of an isolated shower through the day.

Saturday starts out with sunshine, but cloud cover slow builds through the day as temperatures climb into the upper teens. Widespread rain begins overnight and continues into Sunday.

Rain moves out Sunday afternoon followed by some clearing of the cloud cover. Temperatures will rapidly fall through the day on a cold northerly wind. There is the risk of showers mixed with wet snow later in the day, especially north of the city.

Monday will be chilly but warmer than normal temperatures return by the middle of next week.
