Weekend Outlook: Storms possible over the next couple days

Temperatures will range between the high teens and low 20s

One month ago, a storm system moved across the Sault region to bring at least four tornadoes and widespread storm damage. Two weeks later, another storm system moved through that got a tornado watch and knocked out power around the region. Finally, this week, storms developed that dropped hail to the Desbarats region and brought more tree limbs. In all my years chasing and forecasting storms in the Sault region, this much activity in a short time is unprecedented.

It appears that one of the most significant changes in our climate is more 'extremes.'

So when I say that storms are arriving this weekend, that already suggest having characteristics that could make them extreme - I think it's safe to say that severe storms are no longer things that happen elsewhere in Ontario. Thunderstorms are tricky to forecast with only hours of lead time, so there's still a chance these storms arrive weaker than expected. But, considering our track record this past month, I think it's better to be safe than sorry. Stay alert for threatening weather on Saturday.

A weak southerly wind arrives Friday to bring additional moisture to the region, resulting in mostly cloudy skies in the morning, followed by partly cloudy skies in the afternoon. Temperatures should climb back into the low 20s this afternoon.

Rain and thunderstorms arrive Saturday morning when a cold front pushes into the region. There could be two waves of storms, but the storms that come in the early afternoon could be severe with strong wind gusts and hail. Daytime highs will reach 23°C despite the clouds and wet weather. South winds in the morning will become westerly in the afternoon.

Sunday should be partly cloudy with a northwest wind dropping max temperatures back to near 19°C.
