Weekend Outlook: Is there a May long weekend weather curse?

If you were hoping for a glorious long weekend of warm and dry weather, then we'd advise you to stop reading this article right now

For years now I've heard stories that when the long weekend and Fair arrives in the Sault for May, then the weather takes a turn for the worse.  So I sat down and went over the May long weekends for the last ten years to see if this is true.

First, I looked at temperatures and found that seven of the last ten May long weekends have been warmer than the normal daytime high of 18°C.  Some of those even reached 30°C.  No weather curse there.

Next, I looked at rainfall records and found that only twice in the last ten years has the May long weekend been rain-free (the last time being 2016).  I found that 50% of the time there is rain on two or three of the days in the long weekend. Curse confirmed - that's just not normal, or fair.

If you were hoping for a glorious long weekend of warm and dry weather, then I'd advise you to stop reading this article right now and try to remember that I don't control the weather.  For those that are impervious to bad news,  I've got a forecast for you;  read on.

The news for this long weekend isn't good and kind of matches the pattern established over the last ten years.  We are likely to see rain on at least two of the three days, but as an extra weather bonus, we'll have temperatures almost 10 degrees below normal.

Cloud cover Friday morning will give way to sunny skies by the early this afternoon.  A cool northwest wind off of Lake Superior will keep temperatures in the city near 10°C. Locations east of the city should see slightly warmer temperatures.

There is the slight chance on Saturday that the odd sunny period might develop (fingers crossed), but for the most part, we will see cloudy skies and showers on and off through the day. Temperatures remain much colder than normal as daytime highs will only reach 8°C.

The showers will turn to heavier rain on Sunday morning before tapering off to showers in the afternoon as temperatures climb to near 8°C. Gusty east winds are likely all day.

The showers come to an end on Monday morning and are replaced with a brisk northerly wind that will keep daytime highs near 10°C again.
