Weekend Outlook: Here comes the snow

The big question is - how much?
weather_weekend_outlook2

We may have dodged the snow last weekend when a large storm turned south, but that won't be the case this weekend. Another winter storm system will again hit Southern Ontario, but this time the northern flank of the system is extensive enough that the Sault area will see heavy snow. The big question is - how much?

A current weather statement by Environment Canada current says 15-25cm, and I'm sure a warning will follow later today. I agree that over 15cm is likely, but with gusting easterly winds, it may be tough to measure overall snow as the snow blows and drifts across the region. Regardless of how much snow falls, we will see challenging driving conditions on Saturday with reduced visibility and accumulating snow.

We should see some sunshine on Friday, but frigid temperatures will be in place with daytime highs near -9°C. A light east wind will bring windchill values in the minus teens all day. Clouds move in during the evening to signal the leading edge of the approaching storm.

Snow should be falling by sunrise on Saturday morning and continue throughout the day with temperatures near -7°C. I'm going with 15-20cm by Sunday morning that will likely gust into higher drifts and leave other areas exposed. The heaviest snow and strongest winds will likely coincide just before noon. The winds will weaken and back to the north in the evening.

Some sunshine returns on Sunday with a cold north wind and daytime highs back down to near -8°C.

Temperatures climb a bit for Monday and settle in near seasonal values for late January at -6°C.
