Prompted by increasing reports of cross-border friction, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario City Council passed the following resolution tonight:

"Whereas world tensions and the war in Iraq have called into question the longstanding goodwill between Canada and the United States; and

Whereas the 'Twin Saults' are a model for international co-operation and trust;

Be it Resolved that Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario reaffirms its support for and friendship with Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and hopes for the safe return of its troops."

The motion was brought forward by Ward 2 Councillor Brady Irwin, who said he's heard stories including one about a young child who was booed by a U.S. crowd when she revealed she was from Canada.

Contemporary urban legends?

Since last Wednesday night, SooToday.com has followed up on a number of reports of Canadians being denied service in Sault, Michigan.

To date, all such reports have been denied when we contacted the businesses said to have been involved.

For example, last night we called Glen's Market on the I-75 Business Spur after someone posted on a SooToday editorial forum that Glen's had a "No Canadians" sign out front.

The response we got from night staffer Connie Graham was typical.

There's no sign, Graham told us. As always, Canadians are more than welcome at Glen's Market, she said.

All Soo Michigan businesses we've contacted about such rumours seemed incredulous, pointing out that Canadians are too important a part of their business to even think about turning us away.
