Calling all area boaters: this summer’s Sault Ste. Marie Poker Run needs your help. The event, which will feature dozens of high-performance speed vessels on the St. Mary’s River, is looking for boat owners to help administer the safety zones.

Taking place on Saturday, July 27, the 2019 Poker Run will start at the Roberta Bondar Marina. At 10:30 a.m., the speed boats will depart and roar east down the river. They’ll collect playing cards at five stops and, when they return to Sault Ste. Marie in the afternoon, the best poker hand wins.

Along the route, boat marshals are required to ensure the participating vessels follow the proper course and to indicate the specific slow zones. Marshals are needed for the following areas: Sault Ste. Marie, Sugar Island, Lake Nicolet, Richards Landing, St. Joseph Island Bridge, Hilton Beach, Thessalon and Bruce Mines.

To register as a boat marshal, or for more details, please contact Alana Kenopic, Manager of Sport Tourism & Special Events for the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation, at 705-759-5462 or [email protected]. Additional information is also available online. Canadian and American boaters are welcomed.

On Poker Run day, citizens are invited to line up along the shoreline to see the boats in action. Also, on Friday, July 26, the public can head down to the Roberta Bondar Marina & Pavilion to see the powerboats and meet the drivers.

As well, on Sunday, July 28, citizens can take a Charity Ride of a Lifetime, with all proceeds going to the Twinkie Foundation, an organization supporting local families that have to travel for children’s medical appointments. Ride space is limited. Spots can be booked online.

The Sault Poker Run is facilitated by Power Boating Canada and Poker Runs America Magazine. Tourism Sault Ste. Marie, a division of the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation, has been assisting organizers in delivering the event for the past four years.
