Walking with Pride (20 photos)

Around 100 people participated, marchers cheered as drivers honked in support

Around 100 people marched in celebration and support of the LGBTQ community on Saturday during the 2016 Pride Walk.

The parade started out from the Bellevue Marina on Pine Street, went down Queen Street, through Bellevue Park and then ended at the park’s pavilion.

March participants waved rainbow flags and cheered as cars that drove by on Queen Street honked in support.

The Pride Walk was held on the last day of the eight-day 2016 Sault Pridefest, organized by Sault Pride.

The parade was followed by a Family Fun Day in the park that included entertainment, children’s activities, vendors, a photo booth, and community organizations.

“We got our momentum. We started out as a two-day event and now Pridefest has grown to eight full days of events within three years and the turnout every year has increased. We’ve gained our momentum, we’ve started,” said Kristen Auer of Sault Pride.

Parades in past years were held in September, started at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre and finished at the Roberta Bondar Pavilion.

The group said they are hoping to grow to even “bigger and better” things.

“Maybe next year we could have a parade down Queen Street, something as big as that,” said Sault Pride’s Susan Rajamaki.
