Walking In Her Moccasins Bundle campaign: A new, progressive, violence-prevention resource

OTTAWA - Tomorrow, the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP) is set to launch a new and progressive violence prevention resource titled Walking In Her Moccasins, at the University of Ottawa (Desmarais Building, 55 Laurier Ave. E., Room 12102) from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Walking In Her Moccasins is a campaign rooted in the rights of Indigenous women and girls to live free from all forms of violence while encouraging Indigenous men and boys to play positive roles in promoting gender equality.

“I am proud to see this resource that was born from community knowledge using sacred teachings, come to life,” states CAP National Chief Robert Bertrand.

This campaign represents a partnership forged between CAP and White Ribbon and acknowledges the impact of colonialism on Indigenous communities. The Bundle, designed to offer 17 healing-based exercises and created for Indigenous men and boys, can be adapted to each Indigenous community need and cultural protocols.

While the Bundle is geared towards engagement with Indigenous communities, CAP hopes that this resource can also enhance non-Indigenous women, girls, men and boys’ awareness and understanding of the root causes linked to the overwhelming violence against Indigenous women and girls.

The launch will include the unveiling of the Bundle publication, a public service announcement promoting both the campaign and an accompanying website that will house the Bundle and other information to mobilize the community.

“CAP believes that this progressive initiative will produce real and substantive change on curbing gender-based violence,” concludes Chief Bertrand. “It is time to turn the page and bring back our sacred teachings.  A time to bring forth our traditions that have been locked away for so very long.”
