VIDEO: That's a lot of snowmobiles

Sault, Mich. tries to smash the Guinness World record for number of snowmobiles in a parade

The hum of several hundred snowmobiles could be heard throughout Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on Thursday, as the town tried its hand at breaking a Guinness World Record for most snowmobiles in a parade.

The parade of sleds began on Water Street in downtown Sault Michigan, and worked its way through the city en route to the I-500 track.

“Snowmobiling is big up here, and always has been,” said Sault Ste. Marie Convention & Visitors Bureau executive director Linda Hoath. “Winter is big for us. We love the winter.”

“I was just talking to two gentlemen that drove up from Flint Michigan just to do this, and they’re driving back today.”

The record for most snowmobiles in a parade currently belongs to the Whitecourt Trailblazers of Whitecourt, Alta., with 1,047 snowmobiles during a parade held in February 2015.

Mary Jo Duvall, coordinator for The Sault Events, says that the unofficial number of snowmobiles registered for the parade is 997, with the official number coming this evening.

“If we don’t make it today, we will do it again,” Hoath said.
