VIDEO: Moose locks through Sault canal

Travel and tourism official for the City of Sault Ste. Marie captures video of moose swimming through canal after its early morning rescue

Alana Kenopic was helping some fishermen get out on the water for the day at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site early Tuesday morning when she happened to come across canal staff helping a small moose.

The moose was stuck in the west side of the canal entrance.

“They brought the moose down into the canal and actually walked [it] through,” said Kenopic. “They got [the moose] with a rope and led [it] into the canal, and then they lowered the water down and opened the gate doors.”

Kenopic took a video of the moose swimming in the canal.

“We were all standing there and I said, 'this is Canadian gold right here. We got a moose coming through our canal',” she said.

It was pure coincidence that Kenopic, manager of travel and tourism for the City of Sault Ste. Marie, caught the moment on video.

“It just happened to be completely ironic that I snapped that video. It was not done [from] a tourism perspective,” she said. “I took the video because I thought my daughter would love it.”

Kenopic has it on good authority that the small moose was spotted swimming past City Hall after being rescued by canal site staff.

“The staff at the canal site were just extraordinary to try and make sure that this moose was safe. It was all hands on deck,” she said. “It was a really cool moment to watch everyone come together.”
