UNITED STATES COAST GUARD

*********************** GRAND MARAIS, Michigan – The Tug Seneca has been removed from its grounded location and is en route to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Weather conditions over the last week prevented any waterborne response to the Tug Seneca, limiting response to shore-side operations.

Nonetheless, divers were successful in completing an assessment of the vessel's watertight integrity and making the necessary repairs to allow the vessel to be dewatered.

A small fleet of tugs and a crane barge were launched on the afternoon of December 21, after it was determined the vessel could be safely re-floated and weather conditions were favorable for the transit.

Yesterday, responders were able to dewater the vessel with high-output pumps and began digging a trench, through which the vessel could be towed from the beach.

Once the trench was completed, responders pulled the tug to deeper water for its voyage back to the Sault.

The Tug Seneca will be towed back to the Carbide dock located in the Sault.

The tug is expected to arrive this evening at 6:00 pm.
