OPP NEWS RELEASE

********************************* Serious train and vehicle collision

(Earlton, Ontario) - The Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police are continuing their investigation into the train/motor vehicle collision that occurred at approximately 10 a.m. on 10 March, 2004 at the railway crossing approximately 2 kilometers north of Earlton on Mini Farm Road.

Pronounced dead at the Temiskaming Hospital after being transported by ambulance was John NETHERCOTT, 40 of Dymond Township.

He was driving a UPI Petroleum fuel truck east bound on Mini Farm Road when he came collided with a southbound ONR passenger train.

The train remained on the tracks but did lose approximately 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

No one aboard the train was injured in the incident.

OPP officers at the scene advised that the spill was not an immediate danger to the residents.

The Earlton and Englehart volunteer fire departments attended the scene to assist.

The Ministry of the Environment is at the scene and is assessing the impact on the environment.

OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigator and Dangerous Goods Officers are also investigating the incident.
