Two local men fined for illegal deer hunt

Two Sault Ste. Marie men have been fined a total of $2,000 for an illegal deer hunt.

Cameron Tucker pleaded guilty and was fined $500 for unlawfully hunting deer without a licence and $500 for obstructing a conservation officer. Tucker also received a two-year hunting prohibition on top of a three-year ban for another hunting offence.

Evan Thorne was fined $1,000 for unlawfully possessing an illegally killed deer.

Court heard that conservation officers received a complaint of two men hunting illegally on St. Joseph Island. Upon investigation, it was determined that on Oct. 29, 2016, Tucker and Thorne were hunting white-tailed deer when Tucker shot and killed a buck deer without a licence.

Tucker and Thorne then took the deer to process at a nearby camp. Tucker also repeatedly provided false information to the officer.

Justice of the Peace James Bubba heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Sault Ste. Marie, on Aug. 9, 2017.
