Two ambulance were found parked for much of the day at the Great Northern Road Walmart Saturday.

But it wasn’t an emergency situation.

Rather, area paramedics were busy collecting non-perishable food items and cash donations in support of the Soup Kitchen Community Centre.

“The Soup Kitchen meets the needs of a broad spectrum of people,” said paramedic and event spokesperson Brian Haines.

Although the 5th annual EMS Food Drive was a great success, Haines feels donations this year may be down a bit compared to previous drives, possibly due to the tough economic climate currently hanging over the Sault.

“We’ve had a lot of people say they wish they could do more, but they just can’t,” he said.

“The demand is much higher on the Soup Kitchen this year than last year,” he continued. “It’s important that people, especially if you’re in a position that you can give, that we do that because we all need to pull together.”
