VIDEO: Fire strikes east-end apartment building (update)

An early evening fire at 4 Huntington Park Cres. resulted in damage to a residential unit.

The following is a news release from Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services:

On Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018, Sault Ste. Marie Fire Service crews responded to numerous calls of a fire in an apartment building in the city’s east-end.

Shortly after 6 p.m, crews responded to a fire in an apartment building in the 0 to 100 block of Huntington Park. Crews were able to contain and extinguish the fire.

Further investigation revealed the cause of the fire relates to improper discarding of smoking materials.

“Smoking materials need to be disposed of properly to prevent fires from happening,” said Fire Prevention Officer Carlo Provenzano, “As a reminder to all citizens, please take the time to properly dispose of smoking materials by dowsing them with water or having a metal container filled with sand to extinguish them properly.”

There is extensive damage to the unit in the building. There were no injuries to report.

Flames shot from the window of an apartment unit on Huntington Park Cres. last night.

Police blocked the west-bound lane of Wellington East while paramedics and several fire trucks attended the scene.

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services says no one was injured in the fire. 

Firefighters responded to the scene just before 6 p.m.

The fire is still under investigation.
