Troy Colin Scotney of Sault Ste. Marie has been charged with murdering a local man during a fight in the downtown area late Friday.

Scotney, 38, appeared before a justice of the peace this morning.

He'll now be transferred to Ontario Superior Court to face the murder charge.

Dead is Trevor Jean-Guy Micwatch (Witzell), 22, also of Sault Stre. Marie.

Police received word around 11 p.m. last night that two males were fighting on Wellington Street East.

Emergency medical services personnel took Micwatch to Sault Area Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Police have placed crime-scene tape around two areas in front of adjoining residences.

Our picture shows 423 Wellington Street East, where plastic sheeting is being used to cover a section of driveway behind a pickup truck.

Next door, the front yard at 421 Wellington Street East is also cordoned off.

This is the Sault's first homicide of 2004.

We've had three other homicides during the past five years: in 2000, 2001 and 2003.

In the 2003 occurrence, 43-year-old Paul Rainone was fatally assaulted in the 600 block of Connaught Avenue.

Crime scene photos

SooToday.com's photos from the crime scene are grainier than usual because we took them at first light this morning.
