An important part of political life is knowing which way the winds are blowing.
Ward 2 Councillor Tony Ryma believes they're blowing in the direction of an alternative energy source for the City.
In particular, Ryma's interested in Sault Ste. Marie's potential as a source for wind energy.
On Monday night, City Council passed a motion from Ryma calling for City staff and other agencies to look into the Sault's suitability as a location for a windmill farm.
Full text of Ryma's motion:
"Whereas windmill farms have been developed in California and Europe as a cost-effective way of generating electricity; and
"Whereas the City of Greater Sudbury has just signed a deal with a company from Germany for a windmill farm;
"Now therefore be it resolved that PUC Inc., the EDC and the appropriate City staff investigate the opportunities for the Sault to harness nature's energy through windmill technology and report back to Council."
Possibility of federal funding?
Ryma told SooToday News that two companies in Val Caron have won contracts to manufacture wind turbines.
Prince Edward Island recently received a $1 million federal grant for wind-driven technology, he said, adding that a series of wind turbines can provide enough electricity for a city of 300,000.
They'll turn forever if you put 'em downwind from City Hall
