A private member's bill authored by Sault MPP Tony Martin will be carried forward to the next session of the Ontario Legislature.

Most private member's bills never become law, but today's edition of the Toronto Star predicts that Martin's bill on disability support "promises to stimulate constructive debate."

Martin's bill, which would index cost-of-living adjustments to income support offered under Ontario's Disability Support Program, passed first reading last fall.

It was among several bills left unresolved when the Legislature adjourned pending the selection of a new leader of the Progressive Conservative Party to replace Premier Mike Harris.

Martin tells the Star he now perceives a "little crack of hope" with the selection of Ernie Eves as the new premier, and he's calling on people with disabilities to collectively push for improved support.
