This group is helping essential workers find RVs to self-isolate in. Here's how (2 photos)

RVs for Canada's Frontline using social media to connect essential workers with would-be motorhome donors

A national effort has been launched on social media to provide essential workers in need of self-isolation spaces with donated motorhomes during the COVID-19 crisis.

RVs for Canada’s Frontline began in Windsor, Ont. in early April, but has expanded its volunteer efforts nationwide.

“The group is growing. I looked this morning - we’re over 1,700 members,” said Marney Carmichael, a former Saultite who volunteers for the group from her home in Burlington, Ont. “It’s getting to the point now where we have already had more than a few matches just organically from the Facebook page.”

Carmichael says RVs for Canada’s Frontline has helped more than 200 essential workers connect with people and businesses willing to donate motorhomes.

The group, which consists of about 10 volunteers, uses its public social media group to register essential workers in need of self-isolation spaces and would-be donors.

The names are entered into a database, which then enables volunteers to work by region in order to determine matches.

“If you are a frontline worker, and you feel you would be safer staying in your driveway than risking even being in the basement of your own home, please go to our Facebook page,” said Carmichael. “You can fill out a simple form, we’ll get you registered in the system and try to do the matchmaking from there.”

Carmichael says there are about three or four essential workers in the Sault and surrounding area currently in need of a self-isolating space - a need that RVs for Canada’s Frontline wants to fulfill for essential workers across northern Ontario.

"This is a shout out to Sault Ste. Marie, to increase the awareness of our initiative to match frontline workers in need of a safe place to stay with available RVs,” she said. “If you have an RV you would like to donate, or are a frontline worker in need of one, simply request to join RVs for Canada's Frontline on Facebook and we will work to find a successful match."
