There was a noise complaint or two about the Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corp.'s Sault Music Salute concert on Saturday night.

But unlike the Michigan Sault fireworks earlier that night, the Ontario pyrotechnics (shown) apparently didn't scare the daylights out of anyone.

It was the first-ever music concert hosted at the airport's new Runway Park and organizers had obtained an exemption from the City's noise bylaw, allowing them to rock on until 2 a.m.

We've checked with both City Police and the airport administration, and the wee-hour fireworks display apparently raised no complaints or concerns.

That wasn't the case with a similar display on the U.S. side three hours earlier.

Intended to welcome back returning troops, and accompanied by sirens, those fireworks caused considerable alarm among people who were aware of the Friday-night bomb threat at the International Bridge and who feared the worst had happened.

Back in Ontario, the Sault Music Salute featured more than a dozen local bands, capped by an early-morning performance by local favourites GSIS Murphy.

About 500 tickets were sold. Combined with food and alcohol sales, organizers expected to break even or achieve a marginal profit.

EDITOR'S NOTE: SooToday.com has a big whack of photos from Saturday night's performance by GSIS Murphy, as well as some nice stuff from the Batachawana Pow-wow more than one week ago. Our plan is to post these later this week as a magazine-type feature.
