NEWS RELEASE - U.S. COAST GUARD

***************************** Opening of lower West Neebish channel

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI –Captain of the Port Sault Ste. Marie will further open the southern half of the West Neebish Channel from Mud Lake Junction Buoy north to West Neebish Channel Light 29 commencing 0900 EST on March 17, 2004.

Coast Guard icebreakers will conduct icebreaking operations in the West Neebish Channel, but will remain south of West Neebish Channel Light 29 to keep the primary (northern) ice bridge from Neebish Island to Barbeau, MI intact.

The Coast Guard is cautioning all recreational ice users, snowmobilers, and Neebish Island residents of the icebreaking activities south of West Neebish Channel Light 29, and is requesting that they not cross West Neebish Channel south of Light 29.

The Coast Guard would like to remind all recreational ice users to plan their activity carefully, use caution on the ice, and stay away from shipping channels, which are being groomed for the opening of the shipping season
