The ice, it's not that thick this year

In the East Algoma area specifically, but probably other areas too. So be careful this weekend. OK?

NEWS RELEASE

ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE

ELLIOT LAKE – The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind the public to assess and manage the risks of their recreational activities so that everyone can safely enjoy the outdoors.

The bodies of water in the area have not had the usual cold temperatures to allow safe ice to form.

Ice that has formed over flowing water, springs, pressure cracks, old ice holes or around the mouths of rivers and streams can be weaker.

Ice can erode from the bottom up leaving you no obvious warning signs.

Assess and if not safe stay off the ice!

Staff Sergeant Richard Riopelle of the East Algoma OPP says, “The weather this winter has been very mild thus it may not be safe as ice conditions can vary. If it’s unreliable don’t risk your or anyone’s safety.”
