SAULT AREA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

Andrew Ashman, the local Trainmaster for CN (Canadian National Railway Company) presented the Sault Area Hospital Foundation with a $20,000 gift from his employer.

CN has made this generous gift towards the purchase of two brand new High Volume Chemistry Analyzers for the Sault Area Hospital (SAH) Laboratory.

Ashman toured SAH, with emphasis on the Laboratory Department, led by special guides Marie Paluzzi, Vice President & COO and Dr. Michael D’Agostino, Pathologist.

The CN gift was received for the campaign to help replace these two pieces of equipment essential to patient care.

“CN believes strongly in supporting all the people in the communities we operate in. Being able to support our community and ensuring that everyone has access to excellent healthcare is something we are proud to be a part of” stated Ashman.

“CN’s gift is helping purchase equipment that will be used to provide healthcare for the majority of patients that visit our Hospital. Nearly every blood sample taken in our facility will be processed through these pieces of equipment and from that physicians will continue to make accurate diagnoses” explained Michael D’Agostini, Pathologist at SAH.

The campaign for the High Volume Chemistry Analyzers began April 2013 with a goal to raise the total $450,000 to purchase the two pieces of equipment.

Due to the importance of the tests performed in this department, the two Chemistry Analyzers are run in shifts to limit the wear and tear that can be caused by overuse.

The current setup in the Sault Area Hospital Laboratory has been operating for over 60,000 hours.

They were first put into operation in January of 2007.

The two machines perform, on average, 2,100 tests a day, while performing approximately between 750,000 and 1.1 million tests a year.
