That's weird: White square freezer adrift on Lake Superior

It sounds odd, but it's not really that unusual, said a supervisor with the Coast Guard

The Coast Guard issued a warning that a white square chest freezer was drifting on Lake Superior on Saturday.

At around 10 a.m. on Saturday the vessel ‘Frodo’ reported it to the Coast Guard.

Frodo said that a ‘dock box or chest freezer’ was a couple feet above the waterline, drifting in the harbour north of Mutton Island, near Thunder Bay said a supervisor with the Canadian Coast Guard Marine Communications and Services Centre.

The issued Notice to Shipping said a white chest freezer about 1.2 meters in length was seen adrift 465 meters east of Mutton Island.

“Our procedure is to publish it for 24 hours… no one else reported it so it just goes out,” said the supervisor. “Either we’ll get another call for it with an updated position or its now filled with water and it’s at the bottom of the lake.”

No further updates came in on the object - it could still be floating on Lake Superior.

The supervisor said the incident was not considered weird.

"There’s things that float in the Great Lakes all the time,” said the supervisor.
