NEWS RELEASE

TERRY FOX RUN

*************************
Thirty-seven years after Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope we not only continue to raise money for cancer research in his name, but as Canadians we carry on his legacy.

2017 marks the 37th anniversary of the annual Terry Fox Run for cancer research. Terry started his run on Apr. 12, 1980 out of St. John’s, Nfld., and was forced to quit 37 years ago on Sept. 1 in Thunder Bay after running more than 5,000km in 143 days.

Terry’s cancer had returned; his bone cancer had spread to his lungs. Before being flown out of Thunder Bay to head back to British Columbia for treatment Terry stated “I’m gonna do my very best. I’ll fight. I promise I won’t give up.” And give up he didn’t. Terry fought his cancer for another 10 months before passing away on June 28, 1981. His death rocked the nation and left us heartbroken.

Terry died just one month before his 23rd birthday – but his death was not in vain – hundreds of runs are held annually each year across Canada, one of which in Sault Ste. Marie.

Please join us in Sault Ste. Marie at the Roberta Bondar Pavilion on Sept. 17 to celebrate the 37th annual Terry Fox Run, and run or walk in Terry's honour along with thousands of other across the nation and the world.

The SSM run will start at 10 a.m. sharp, with registration starting at 8:30 a.m. The event features a 2k/5k/10k run, walk or ride route along our beautiful waterfront and Hub Trail.

Anyone and everyone is encouraged to participate, and also to take advantage of our popular kids zone, face painting, M & M Food Market BBQ and check out our silent auction table with lots of items to bid on from local sponsors!

The Sault Ste. Marie Run has raised over $500,000 since 1982 and we hope to see that number continue to grow! As always there is no minimum donation and no entry fee.

To find out more check out terryfox.org, visit The Shoe Fits in the Station Mall for a pledge form, visit our Facebook page for the SSM event or feel free to contact Colette or Rick by email at [email protected].

“Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.” - Terry Fox
