Ted Nolan is still in the running for the coach's job at New York Rangers, after frontrunner Herb Brooks indicated Friday he'll be staying in Minnesota, where he scouts for Pittsburgh Penguins.
The New York Times is quoting a "high-ranking official in the National Hockey League" as saying that Nolan could land the job if the Rangers can locate a strong assistant for him.
Nolan is considered a first-class motivator but there are also concerns that he's been out of the game since the 1996-97 season, the Times reports.
Second round of interviews
The New York Daily News is reporting this morning that Nolan has made the cut for a second round of interviews with previously interviewed candidates including Rangers assistant coach Walt Kyle and Hartford head coach John Paddock. "I'm hoping everyone else drops out and I'm still standing," Nolan told the Times' Jason Diamos.
"I don't know if I'm even on the short list. But hopefully, there's a glimmer of hope."
Reviewing Rangers game films
Nolan told the Times he's been going over game films and doing a lot of research on the Rangers.
As SooToday News reported on April 29, Nolan was interviewed for the job last month by Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather. To see that article, click here
In addition to Brooks (who coached the silver medal-winning US team this year at the Salt Lake City Olympics), two other candidates interviewed by Sather dropped off the eligibility list this week.
Tippett, Hitchcock get jobs elsewhere
Los Angeles Kings assistant coach Dave Tippett signed on as coach of the Dallas Stars, and former Dallas coach Ken Hitchcock got hired to coach Philadelphia Flyers.
Today's edition of the New York Daily News predicts Sather won't make a decision for at least a couple of weeks.
