With local elementary school teachers poised for a strike vote on Saturday, officials of the Algoma District School Board insist they're being asked to work no more hours than their counterparts at other local boards.

"The board wants us to work more hours than any other teacher in the province," the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) said in recent radio and newspaper ads.

However, the 194-day school calendar approved by the board last night ensures that the Board’s elementary teacher’s hours are the same as their local counterparts, says Superintendent Pam Cooper .

"Our calendar is aligned with the Separate and French boards’" Cooper says.

Gayle Manley, president of ETFO's Algoma local, told SooToday.com that the ads referred to the board's original request for a 196-day school calendar.

Before approving the reduced 194-day calendar, some trustees commented about calls they received about elementary teacher workload.

ETFO's Algoma local has called a meeting this Saturday at which teachers will take a legal strike vote.

Local elementary teachers have been working without a contract since September 2002.
