Suspicious package shuts down part of Pine Street (update: no threat to public safety)

The situation has been resolved after police discovered that the package contained road flares

In a release issued this afternoon, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service advise that there is no threat to public safety after officers responded to a report of a suspicious package in the 700 block of Pine Street.

Police responded to the call around 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

Members of the  Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU), Patrol Services, Investigation Services and the Emergency Services Unit were called in to secure the area and continue the investigation.

The items inside the package were deemed to be road flares.

With the situation resolved, traffic in the area is now moving normally.

There is currently a heavy police presence in the 700 block of Pine Street. Officers located a suspicious package in the area.

Officers are evacuating people who are in close proximity. Others who live in the area should shelter in place and avoid windows, doors and balconies.

At this time, the public is urged to avoid the area. We will release more information as it becomes available.
