Susan Milne, the lady who persuaded us to tidy our neighborhoods, parks and open spaces, is now setting out to spruce up City Council.

Milne, a member of the City's Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee who spearheaded our involvement in the Communities in Bloom competition, filed nomination papers Wednesday to run in Ward 2.

Earlier this week City Council approved $1,031 for Milne to travel next week to Keene, Ontario with Lori Ballstadt, the City's assistant manager of recreation and culture, to attend the Communities in Bloom awards ceremony.

Milne is also heavily involved in the drive to establish a skateboard park in Sault Ste. Marie.

The following is the full text of Milne's announcement material, as sent to SooToday.com:

**************************************************************** SUSAN MILNE - COUNCILLOR WARD 2

- Lifelong Sault Ste. Marie resident

- Active member of the community

- Strong, clear vision of the future

To the residents of Ward 2:

I’m Susan Milne and I have decided to run for council in Ward 2.

If you will give me a few minutes of your time, and a few at the voting booth, I will commit my time to serving you as councillor for Ward 2.

My husband Steve and myself are both long time residents of Sault Ste. Marie. We have four school-aged sons.

I am a manager with Rome’s Independent Grocer.

I have been an active member of the community for the past 15 years.

I have been involved with scouting, School councils, Master Gardeners, Communities in Bloom and am in my second term on the city’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee.

I believe we need to develop Sault Ste. Marie for the people who live here NOW.

We need to take the right actions to make our city a healthy and productive community for us, the current residents.

Out-migration, particularly of our young people, is an important issue, but if Sault Ste. Marie is a vibrant and caring environment for its residents, then our young will come home.

For that to happen, we need flexible, modern ideas that address OUR problems and concerns.

While serving on Council, I will encourage:

- Increased fiscal responsibility & accountability including limits on the use of costly consultants

- Increasing access to federal and provincial funding programs

- Development of year round recreational facilities for all ages

- The development and implementation of plans and strategies for Sault Ste. Marie supported by all members of council

These are just a few of the ideas, which I believe will enhance our community.

If you would like to hear more about my campaign or would like to work with my team, please contact me.

I look forward to your support on November 10th.
