String of vacant property fires suspicious, say police (4 photos)

Sault Ste. Marie Police Services are investigating possible connections between several recent fires

City police are investigating possible connections between multiple suspicious fires at vacant sites that have happened in the city recently.

On April 17 and 27, there were two suspicious fires in the abandoned Pulp Tower at Mill Square while on April 28 a fire happened at 172 Cathcart Street, the second fire at that building in the last year.

After the April 17 incident fire fighters said that the first tower at the Pulp Tower showed signs of vandalism and said witnesses saw two people running away from the site.

Ten days later, just after 5 p.m. on April 27, another fire occurred at that same site, also dubbed suspicious by police.

Just hours after that incident, at around 1:45 a.m. April 28, another fire occurred at a vacant house at 172 Cathcart Street.

To add to the possible string of connections, a fire also occurred at the same Cathcart house in July 2016 however at that time the house was occupied.

Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Const. Sonny Spina said the recent three fires are all suspicious however, in all four fires, no charges have been laid.

“They are vacant properties, there is no reason for a fire to start in those locations. Right now we do not know if they are linked but it is something we are exploring,” said Spina.

If you have any information regarding the fire, call Sault Police at 705-949-6300, or Crime Stoppers at 705-942-7867 or 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
